A long-term energy savings strategy is important in keeping your home’s energy costs contained. Addressing your HVAC system can have a big effect on your energy bills, as heating and cooling costs can make up as much as half of your home’s energy use.

The following energy savings strategy offers you long-term savings:

  • Change your air filter regularly.
Regularly changing your air filter, at least every three months, prevents your system from straining to move air and is an inexpensive and simple energy savings strategy. A clean filter not only improves efficiency to save energy, it also prevents dirt buildup in the system that can lead to expensive maintenance and damage to your system.
  • Perform yearly maintenance.
Yearly maintenance improves efficiency and comfort. Clean weeds, plants, and leaves from around your outdoor unit. Use a soft broom to remove debris from the unit’s fins. Spray the outside unit with a water hose every now and then. Check vents in your home to make sure they are not blocked by hair or furniture that may reduce airflow.
  • Install a programmable thermostat.
When pre-programmed settings are used correctly, programmable thermostats are an effective energy savings strategy. There are even models available that can be programmed remotely from a computer or smartphone. Choose the model best suited for your schedule to ensure optimum energy savings.
  • Check your ductwork.
Leaky ducts can reduce efficiency by 20 percent or more. Insulating ducts and sealing leaks with foil tape or duct sealant can really help you save energy over the long-term. Focus on attic, basement, crawl space and garage ducts first.
  • Hire a contractor.
Do your research, and select a trained, professional contractor. A trained contractor can help you avoid unexpected and costly repairs on a professional maintenance visit by finding issues your untrained eyes may miss. They can also help you with things you are unable to do yourself.
