What You Can Do
Keeping your house clean (especially around vents and heat registers) will do more than you think. Not only will it preserve your indoor air quality, but it will also keep your system running efficiently. In that same vein, run your HVAC system responsibly. If you can stand to turn down the AC and have your windows open or fans on, do it. Giving your HVAC a break will increase its longevity and lower the amount of required maintenance.
Homeowners can also change the filters on their system (which should be done about once a month). But make sure you know what you’re doing. If you don’t, leave it to the pros. When in doubt, don’t try.
What to Leave to the Pros
Electrical work. Don’t take the chance of doing your own rewiring or other electrical work. Not only could a mistake cause you some pain, but it could also lead to other consequences, like electrical fires. Also don’t try to replace HVAC components (other than the filter) on your own. Again, the damage caused by a mistake could be irreparable or a fix that would be much more expensive than if the proper maintenance had been completed.
