How to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Recent studies show poor indoor air quality is becoming an increasingly greater health risk in America.  Pollutants like chemicals, smoke, carbon monoxide, pet dander, dust particles and even radon are making themselves welcome in our homes, irritating allergies, causing respiratory infections, asthma and even cancer in some cases.  Here are some tips on how to improve indoor air quality in your home.

  • Improve ventilation – Using exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathrooms will remove contaminants at the source and keep your home smelling fresher. Bringing outdoor air inside, when possible, will also aid in improving the ventilation in your home.  Always, always paint in a well ventilated area or do these types of activities outdoors when weather permits.
  • Air purification – Cleaning the air in your home could be as simple as using HEPA filters in tandem with your heating and air conditioning system.
  • Healthy humidity levels – Humidity should be between 30 and 50 percent.  Average humidity in Charlotte is 67 percent, with morning highs around 83 percent.  Dust mites and mold thrive in warm, wet environments so to keep them from growing in your home a whole house dehumidifier could be the right choice for your family. Another consideration is having the crawl space under your home encapsulated or sealed to keep moisture and pests from entering your home.
  • Eliminate pollutants at the source – Do not smoke inside your home and ask guests to light up outside as well. Use chemical free household cleansers with natural ingredients like lemon and baking soda as opposed to commercial cleaners containing harsh chemicals. Ask friends and family members to remove shoes before entering your home. And, finally, keep floors clean by sweeping or vacuuming regularly.
